When you need to work at height, choosing the right lift can make a big difference. Boom lifts and scissor lifts are both designed for elevated work, but they are built for different types of jobs.
The simplest way to think about it:
Need to reach up, out, or over? Boom lift
Need to go straight up with more room to work? Scissor lift
Boom Lifts
Boom lifts provide both vertical and horizontal reach, allowing you to position the platform where you need it. Depending on the type of boom, you can reach up, out, and over obstacles.
Articulating boom lifts are useful for reaching around and over obstacles, while telescopic boom lifts provide long, straight reach.
A boom lift may be the better choice when you need:
- Significant height and horizontal reach
- Access around buildings or other obstacles
- Precise platform positioning
- Outdoor jobsite mobility
- Access to areas that aren't directly above the machine
Scissor Lifts
Scissor lifts are designed primarily for vertical access. Their larger platforms provide more room for workers, tools, and materials.
Slab scissor lifts are generally suited for smooth, level surfaces and are commonly used indoors. Rough terrain scissor lifts are designed for outdoor jobsites and more demanding ground conditions.
A scissor lift may be the better choice when you need:
- Primarily vertical access
- A larger work platform
- Room for multiple workers, tools, or materials
- Indoor access or smooth, level surfaces
- Outdoor access on rough terrain
What Should You Consider?
Before choosing a lift, think about:
- Height: How high do you need to work?
- Reach: Do you need to reach out or over obstacles?
- Terrain: Will you be working indoors, outdoors, or on uneven ground?
- Capacity: How many workers, tools, and materials will be on the platform?
- Mobility: How often will you need to reposition the machine?
- Workspace: Do you need a larger platform or more reach?
Working height and platform height are also different. Make sure the machine you choose provides the height and reach your job actually requires.
Which Lift Is Right For You?
There isn't one lift that's best for every job. If reach and positioning are your priority, a boom lift may be the better choice. If platform space and vertical access are more important, a scissor lift may be the better fit.
