Both articulating and telescopic boom lifts provide access at height, but they are designed for different types of work.
The easiest way to remember the difference is:
Articulating boom = up, over, and around.
Telescopic boom = up and out.
Articulating Boom Lifts
An articulating boom lift, also called a knuckle boom, has multiple sections that allow the boom to bend and position the platform around obstacles.
They're a good choice when you need to:
- Reach up and over obstacles
- Work around buildings or structures
- Access hard-to-reach areas
- Precisely position the platform
- Work where the machine can't be positioned directly below the work area
Articulating booms are especially useful when positioning and flexibility are more important than maximum straight-line reach.
Telescopic Boom Lifts
A telescopic boom lift, also called a straight boom, extends outward in a straight line to provide long vertical and horizontal reach.
They're a good choice when you need:
- Greater vertical reach
- Long horizontal reach
- Access to elevated areas from a distance
- Straight-line reach across larger jobsites
- Maximum reach without needing to work around obstacles
If height and reach are your priorities, a telescopic boom may be the better choice.
Which One Is Right For You?
Neither type is necessarily better than the other. It depends on the job.
Choose an articulating boom when you need:
Up-and-over access, flexibility, and precise positioning.
Choose a telescopic boom when you need:
Long, straight reach and maximum height.
Before choosing a machine, consider:
- Working height
- Horizontal reach
- Obstacles around the work area
- Terrain
- Platform capacity
- Indoor or outdoor use
- Available space
